Celebration of tenth jubilee for graduating from High School

I graduated from Taarnby Gymnasium/High School 10 years ago. It was celebrated with a nice gathering this weekend. It was very nice to meet the guys and girls from our class 13. Y, anno 1997. The most of us have become fathers and mothers. It was really nice to talk with the others as we all are much more matured now and then more comfortable to communicate with. We are all employed in different sectors. We have a Ph. D, a Ph. D-fellow and the others are working in different sectors from Finance to change management, teaching, literature, arts, insurance, shipping, law, public and administration. Only I and one another guy are IT-geeks.

After the gathering I reflected about the three years of High School-time regarding teaching. I think the purpose of High School is to gather basic knowledge, learn to learn and become more mature, but by God how many of our teachers were some fools and bad teachers. I personally didn´t learned what I should do. There was very little focus in group and project working and how can students become more mature without this? The education in for example math, physics and chemistry was very hard to understand and to theoretical. Especially the oral exams in for example in math were hard, because it was primary based on proving the proofs of math and not at all on practical use. After the High School I ended at the Engineering University of Copenhagen and here I really learned to learn and to use our theory practically. I am very great full for the years at the Uni and the project and group work matured me a lot. I resulted in that my grades at the Engineering University of Copenhagen and now at IT-University of Copenhagen is about 2 grades higher than the High School!

Some one invented the concept of learning the whole life. In the gathering I learned the difference between high and low tones in context of a PS2-game with karaoke etc. It was really new knowledge for me, though I should have learned it in the Music-subject in 1. Y…: - )

Open Source ESB - Mule at The Danish Commerce and Companies Agency (DCCA)

I recently got a comment from James McGovern , who pointed out that instead of writing about commercial ESB-produkt like here, here and here I should point people towards Open Source projects like the ServiceMix ESB and the Liferay Portal and CMS.

Thank you for your comment James and in this context I will mention that DCCA uses an ESB-product based on Mule. They use the ESB-product for a self-service service: - ) for companies, where they can register their production places. The ESB is used for integration and service enabling of a case and document handling system based on Documentum. Drools is used as a rules engine.

So the above mentioned open source ESBs can deliver most of the functionality from the commcercial ESBs. But they still don´t have much success and maybe are the causes and challenges the same as other open source software?

Starting Blog-tag game in Denmark

Jeff Pulver have introduced a Blog tag-game . The game is about getting bloggers to share five things about themselves that relatively few people know, and then tagging five(4) other bloggers to be "it". This game is also going on in the Enterprise Architecture part of Blogosphere and I am now starting it in Denmark.

So, here are 5 things most people that read my blog don't know about me:

1. I have a bachelor-degree in civil engineering and have worked as a trainee on the construction of The Copenhagen Metro.
2. My first job after graduating was in traffic-management in city of Copenhagen, where I planned and designed traffic signals and traffic information systems.
3. My first computer was a Commodore 64 with cassette tape drive, which you ran until it found the spot where the pirated games could run.
4. My favorite subjects at the college were religion, history, political science and art. I was very bad to mathematics and physics, but I still ended in the engineering and it-field.
5. I and my son love cartoon and animations-movies. We always see the latest cartoon and animation movies in the cinema and we have not a rather large collection at home. Some of our favorite movies are Toy Story, Boog and Eliot and Monsters..

This was about me. So I now tag other EA-geeks: Dr. John Gotze, Rasmus Knippel, Kristian Hjort-Madsen and Peter Dejberg. You guys are "it" now:-)

National basic SOA-principles, standard definition of SOA...

The National IT and Telecom agency have now published the SOA-pamphlet (yes, a pamphlet with 66 pages: - )). It is the first main publication after the White book in 2003 and Handbook in 2004 about Enterprise Architecture in e-government. The pamphlet is very interesting and useful for introduction to SOA in the public sector. The most interesting for me, are the SOA-principles that have potential to act as basic common SOA-principles across the public sector in Denmark. I have translated 11 of the principles; yes for my many international readers:

- Business focused services

- Reusable services

- Contractbased services

- Loosely coupled services

- Platform independent use af services

- Location independent anvendelse af services

- Orchestration of services

- Services are an abstraction for business functionality and information

- Services should be versionizied

- Services must be registred and are visible

- SOA is based on standards

And believe me; I have got a lot of discussions about that Enterprise Architecture and SOA-governance must be included in the above principles, but without result. Another interesting point is that the Agency now call SOA for an architectural style. I agree in it and I also call it this in my thesis. – And from now, I will not hear SOA as strategy, software architecture, technology architecture, architectural model, an architectural principle, method, paradigm, framework and I could continue for long time. Can we make this as a standard now? SOA is an architectural style!
